I was sitting at my window in NE Philadelphia, PA, watching yellow finches on my purple daisy's one afternoon. I saw something FLY right past the window and down into my garden. It was just a little smaller than the yellow finches i was watching, and brown?ish in color. It landed and quickly crawled into a hole in the ground, so fast I couldn't see what it was... I went outside to look and see where it went, and it dug a small hole about 1.5-2 inches in diameter down in the dirt at an angle, with the dirt pushed out the opposite side of the hole. I'm not sure of any insects that big and that would push a good amount of dirt out of a hole to burrow, or any mammals out in the daylight that fly or burrow in the ground.... ANYWAY - If anyone has any idea what this might have been, that would be wonderful because the suspense is killing me! I've sat for periods of time out front of my house to wait and see if it would come out of the hole, but no action... I went outside to take a picture of the hole so you guys know what I'm looking at. In the photo the hole is facing away from you (if you put a stick down the hole, it would be facing away from you at about 2 o'clock). http://www.flickr.com/photos/cooleen83/2780936289/... read more
